Microsoft buyout 2026: employees reviewing the voluntary exit offer at a Microsoft office

Why the Microsoft buyout matters

About a quarter of Microsoft’s workforce just got an offer to leave. On October 26, 2026, the company told roughly 60,000 employees in the US, Canada, the UK and India that they can exit now with standard severance. The Microsoft buyout, as news outlets keep calling it, closes for India staff on December 1.

Microsoft avoids the word itself. Its name for the program is the Voluntary Exit Offer, and a spokesperson pushed back on the “buyout” label. People search for both terms, so this guide uses both. It covers who qualifies, what the package pays, how it differs from April’s retirement program, and what HR teams can take from it.

What is the Microsoft buyout?

Microsoft’s buyout is a Voluntary Exit Offer announced on October 26, 2026. It lets about 60,000 eligible employees in the US, Canada, the UK and India leave with standard severance, healthcare support and career transition help. Microsoft says it is not a layoff, and staff must decide by early December.

Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced it in a memo that Microsoft also posted on its blog. She described it as a new choice for people already weighing a future outside the company, and as one more way for teams to adjust to changing needs. Microsoft says the offer doesn’t mean it needs fewer people overall.

Who is eligible for Microsoft’s voluntary exit offer?

Three things decide whether you got the email: your country, your level and your team.

The country list is short: the US, Canada, the UK and India. On level, the cutoff is 70 on Microsoft’s internal scale, which covers general managers and some employees with vice president titles but not corporate vice presidents. Team is where it gets uneven. Coleman wrote that some organizations offer the exit and some don’t, depending on their priorities, customer commitments, and workforce needs. Reports say sales, marketing, data-center roles and some engineering teams are out.

There’s no age or tenure test, and performance isn’t a factor. April’s program had an age-and-service test. Eligible employees got an email on October 26 with a link to their own offer details.

What does the Microsoft buyout package include?

Microsoft says the package equals its standard severance. That means base pay set by tenure and level, healthcare coverage for a fixed period and career transition services. One report adds continued stock vesting, so check your own offer letter on that point. Exact terms vary by employee, so your number depends on your level and years of service.

For India, Business Standard reports one month of base salary for every completed year of service, plus health insurance and career transition services. Take an employee with eight completed years. That formula gives about eight months of base pay. (That’s our arithmetic, not a Microsoft figure.)

By Microsoft’s own recent standards, the offer is lean. It lacks the extended healthcare that came with April’s retirement program. For comparison, severance in Microsoft’s layoffs earlier this year included at least 60 days of base pay, according to Business Standard.

Is the Microsoft buyout a layoff?

No. Nobody is forced out under this offer, and an employee who doesn’t accept keeps the job. But it isn’t a promise that layoffs are over either. Microsoft told GeekWire that the offer doesn’t replace layoffs, which stay part of its approach depending on business conditions.

Look at the sequence. A voluntary retirement program ran in April. Layoffs followed in July, and Coleman said the retirement uptake made them smaller. Now there’s a much wider voluntary offer in October. A Microsoft spokesperson told Business Insider there are no plans for another voluntary offer right now, but Coleman said in July that the company was studying how to make voluntary exits a regular practice.

How is it different from April’s voluntary retirement program?

April 2026 retirement program October 2026 exit offer
Who About 8,600 to 8,750 US employees (reports differ) About 60,000 across four countries
Rule Age plus years of service of 70 or more, senior director and below No age or tenure test, level 70 and below
Package Richer, with extended healthcare Standard severance
Uptake About 30% accepted Microsoft expects far fewer

The April program was the first voluntary buyout in Microsoft’s 51-year history. The new one reaches nearly seven times as many people. Microsoft told The Register that part of the reason is feedback from employees who said they would have taken the retirement offer if it had been open to them, as CX Magazine reports.

How many employees will take the Microsoft buyout?

Probably not many. Microsoft’s CFO, Amy Hood, said she expects “very few people” to accept. The company’s spokesperson pointed to similar programs elsewhere, where roughly 5% to 6% of eligible employees left. Apply that range to 60,000 people and you get about 3,000 to 3,600 exits, against roughly 2,600 if April’s 30% rate repeated on a pool of 8,750. (Again, that’s our math.)

The package gives a hint about why. It’s standard severance with no sweetener, so the people who take it are mostly those who already wanted to go.

Why is Microsoft doing this?

Coverage ties the offer to heavy spending on AI infrastructure and to cost control. Microsoft’s headcount was 223,000 at the end of June, down from 228,000 a year earlier, per TechCrunch’s reporting on its filings. Microsoft says the offer is about giving employees a choice and teams flexibility.

Our read: both can be true. A voluntary exit is a cheaper way to rebalance teams than layoffs. It draws less public scrutiny, and the company doesn’t have to pick names. The price is control. When employees choose, the company doesn’t decide who leaves.

What HR leaders can learn from Microsoft’s voluntary exit offer

You don’t need 60,000 employees to use these ideas. A 200-person company running a voluntary exit window faces the same four problems.

  1. Decide who’s in before you announce: Microsoft let teams opt in and left some functions out. Say so clearly. If employees have to guess whether they qualify, the rumor mill will answer for you.
  2. Give a number and a date: India’s one-month-per-year formula is easy to explain, and a December 1 deadline ends the waiting. People can do the math at the dinner table, which is the point.
  3. Expect the wrong people to want out: Employees with the most options usually decide first. Track acceptances by team and performance band, and hold retention conversations before the window opens, not after.
  4. Talk to the people who stay: After a voluntary exit and possible layoffs, the ones who remain wonder what comes next. Run a short pulse survey within weeks and act on it. Our employee engagement survey and certification program is built for exactly that kind of check, and our piece on workplace culture trends for 2027 covers where employee expectations are heading.

Should an employee take a voluntary exit offer?

That depends on your own numbers, and this isn’t legal or financial advice. Before you decide, compare these:

  • Cash: how many months of severance versus how long a job search could take in your field
  • Stock: what happens to unvested grants, and for how long vesting continues
  • Health cover: how long it lasts and what it costs afterward
  • Visa or notice terms: if your work authorization depends on the job, speak to an immigration lawyer first

A tax adviser can tell you how your payout will be treated. Then ask your manager or HR contact one direct question: is your team likely to be affected by layoffs if you stay?

Microsoft buyout FAQ

Is the Microsoft buyout mandatory?

No. The Voluntary Exit Offer is optional. Employees who don’t accept by the deadline keep their jobs, though Microsoft says layoffs remain part of how it manages business change.

How much will Microsoft India employees get?

India staff get one month of base salary for each completed year of service, plus health insurance and career transition services. Microsoft shares exact figures with each employee individually, so your amount depends on your tenure.

What is the Microsoft buyout deadline?

India employees must decide by December 1, 2026. Other reports place the wider deadline in the first week of December.

Who isn’t eligible for the Microsoft voluntary exit offer?

Employees above level 70, including corporate vice presidents, and staff in teams that aren’t participating. Reports name some sales, marketing, data-center and engineering groups.

Will Microsoft do more layoffs after the buyout?

Microsoft hasn’t ruled it out. The company says the offer doesn’t replace layoffs, which depend on business conditions. A spokesperson said no further voluntary offer is planned right now.
